Why we started the Skid Row Art Walk?

We want to create a community informed narrative around the homelessness crisis — one that reduces the stigma around the homeless community and sheds lights on policies addressing the homeless crisis. This narrative will be depicted through an art walk centered around ideas of home and community.

This art walk will work with current organizations that are in skid row to collaborative on bringing awareness of social issues in the community via art and media. Issues include hunger, mental health, affordable single room housing (and family housing), job security, and the looming issue of a growing city and displacement (gentrification).

Our media campaign contains multimedia elements ranging from physical art experiences, musical performances, written pieces, to virtual reality. This exhibit will be a collaboration between contemporary artists and community artists around the area of Skid Row. The theme of our first exhibit (or possibly future ones) will revolve around the idea of a home which will operate as a counter-narrative to the assumptions we often hold over “homeless” individuals.

We will host weekly workshops throughout each month where homeless individuals can come into space (select nonprofit) to paint, draw, write, etc. with the materials provided. Through partnerships with large art stores and local communities, we hope to take art supply donations for the homeless to work with. The art walk will be an outdoor exhibit with a tent canopy setup.

The goals of our initial campaign are to bring awareness to the homelessness crisis, inform what resources are needed by the homeless community, and create a space for displaced people to share their own narratives through various art forms. The goal of the art walk is to provide support and compensation for community artists.
